Job Description of Technologists

Technology is the combination of any systems, practices, and techniques utilized in the creation of services or products or in the achievement of specific goals, including scientific discovery. It is the application of science and technology to improve and produce better products and/or services. As defined by Webster’s Dictionary, technology is “the application of scientific knowledge and ideas for the improvement of the nature, development, and manufacture of the things made by man.” Technological change is the systematic transformation of something from being naturally existing to something more advanced and useful. Technological change may result from an evolutionary process (natural selection) or from a radical form of innovation.


Technologists can be found throughout all professions. Technologists are involved in research, engineering, medicine, computer sciences, and numerous other arenas. Many technologists are considered to be engineers who have developed specific skills in areas outside of their normal field of study. Engineers like to think outside of the box, often doing research that produces new ways of accomplishing problems in various fields. Some technologists work in highly structured, laboratory-based settings, while others work in more free-form settings where they are less constrained by the specific nature of their jobs.

Technologists use a wide variety of scientific and technological tools to advance human knowledge and to implement the creative concepts behind new discoveries. They are essential staff members in virtually all scientific and technological organizations. Technologists perform routine tasks in various fields, ranging from researching and analyzing scientific data to designing new systems, procedures, and equipment. In recent years, technologists are expected to be involved in basic research, as well as work in industry, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

Technologists are responsible for discovering and developing new technologies and systems that make the world as a whole a better place to live in. They play a significant role in improving the quality of life for everyone. Technologists can find and develop new scientific and technological innovations. They contribute their professional expertise to an array of projects that seek to make the world a better place.

As technologists, you will be engaged in researching and testing new scientific and technological concepts. In order to do this job well, you should have a strong foundation of scientific knowledge and a strong attention to detail. You must be able to think critically about problems and come up with original solutions. A technologist must be open to new ideas and theories. You will need to use your innovative thinking skills to analyze, test, and verify scientific information.

Many technologists obtain a graduate degree in computer sciences or engineering. There are also several colleges and universities that offer a program in advanced computer technology that graduates can enter into the workforce immediately after completing the coursework. The skills that you will acquire by completing an advanced computer science or engineering degree will help you to perform research and testing of new scientific and technological innovations. You will also be prepared to conduct demonstrations regarding the implementation of new technologies in manufacturing and business settings. A successful technologist must be versatile in both work and personal activities. You must be able to work as independently as needed and be able to maintain effective relationships with a wide range of people.
